AI for business made easier

AI is the transformative force of our day. Smarter businesses are infusing the intelligence of AI with the agility of hybrid cloud to digitally reinvent how they operate and reengage in the world in a more predictive fashion. The disruption caused by the global pandemic has sparked an even greater focus on AI to help drive greater business predictability and resiliency.

Our point of view is three-fold:

  • Data fuels digital reinvention
  • Hybrid Cloud democratizes data
  • AI unlocks the value of data in predictive ways

What’s more, AI for business is essential. AI needs to understand the unique language of your business, intelligently automate its workflows and experiences, enable trust and explainability in outcomes, and run on any cloud — integrating data from any source.

To help enterprises achieve AI capabilities faster, we developed IBM Cloud Pak® for Data to deliver AI for business capabilities via IBM Watson® and an ecosystem of AI provider capabilities. As a next step, we have teamed with Palantir Technologies to make AI for business easier. Our combined objective is to simplify and accelerate how organizations infuse predictive, data-driven insights into real-world decision-making and business operations across a variety of industries.

Palantir Foundry and IBM Cloud Pak for Data is being designed to:

  • Deliver AI for business capabilities in an easy to deploy and manage “no-code, low-code” environment.
  • Simplify how data and AI models link to business decisions and actions with explainability.
  • Inform decisions by automatically mapping data to industry context1and business value.
  • Automate how data is collected, organized and analyzed across hybrid cloud data estates.
  • Consume services from a broad ecosystem of data and AI capabilities, including IBM Watson.

From the black box into the hands of the business

Available March 16, Palantir for IBM Cloud Pak® for Data combines IBM’s hybrid cloud and AI platform with Palantir Technologies‘ intuitive, operational system, to transform an organization’s scaled approach to data and AI. This means users can deploy Palantir in any environment via IBM Cloud Pak for Data running on the Red Hat® OpenShift® platform.

The secret sauce is ease of use. No longer is AI app development limited to data scientists. The solution is designed to deliver AI for business capabilities in an easy to use low-code, no-code, environment so AI applications can be built quickly by mere mortals — simplifying how AI models are linked to business decisions, actions and outcomes.

The solution can help organizations:

  • Make data intelligible through ontology objects that present the whole picture in greater context.
  • Integrate data from diverse sources into Palantir applications (as well as use Watson models developed on Cloud Pak for Data) to improve predictions for fairness and accuracy, so businesses can more confidently apply AI.
  • Publish AI apps with point-and-click operational solutions, all built on top of low code or no-code interfaces.

On a recent episode of IBM Expert TV, I discussed details of the Palantir Technologies and IBM partnership with Will Manning, chief architect of Palantir Foundry, and Priya Krishnan, director of IBM Data and AI tools and runtimes.

We focused on how the solution will help operational users get more business value out of data and AI — extending more AI development capabilities into, for example, factory floors, supply chains or CFO offices.

Palantir’s Will Manning describes some common scenarios that companies encounter when facing COVID-19 related disruptions. For example: how would cancelling a flight or halting the supply of parts impact the rest of the network?  Capabilities within Palantir for IBM Cloud Pak for Data can better help inform decisions by automatically mapping data to unique business ontology or a set of building blocks that map business concepts to the data that describes them.

“It’s allowing users to approach their data in a way that’s thinking about it in real-world terms. It’s also imposing an additional structure that’s allowing them to ask more complex questions on the fly,” said Manning in the broadcast.

In the initial roll out this month, a set of Palantir Foundry’s capabilities will be available with IBM Watson Knowledge Catalog and IBM Watson Studio in Cloud Pak for Data. In the future, integration will extend beyond Machine Learning capabilities, into, for example, Decision Optimization models, then further into IBM Watson OpenScale™, which allows use of AI features inside Cloud Pak for Data.
